Maurice Edu was named the MLS Rookie of the Year today by the MLS. Chivas USA coach Preki was also named as the league’s top coach.
Edu was the top pick in last year’s SuperDraft and he lived up the billing that came with being a number one overall pick. He started in every game that he played in and scored four goals and tallied two assists from his defensive midfield role. Edu’s style of play was the most consistent of any rookie this season and he showed the most potential for his future out of any rookie too.
Preki held is own as Chivas coach this season by going through some highs (dominating home record) and lows (Guevara saga). The Goats won the west and held the second best record in the MLS. Did I mention the dominating home record? Yeah, probably one of the best home records in league history, if not the best.
Some may feel Edu wasn’t the best candidate or that Preki wasn’t the best coach but I think these awards were right. The voters got it right.
