United Close to a DP

United Close to a DP

I know you’re thinking, “there is no way you can sign anyone right now, all the deadlines are up, the windows have closed.” Well that is all true but rumors are already flying around that DC is close to landing a Designated Player for next season.

Word around the league is that DC is close to landing a deal with Argentine midfielder Juan Veron for the 2008 season. For months it has been rumored that United would sign Veron but were unable to do it while the summer transfer window was open.

The biggest question will also be about who United will have to part with or cut to sign Veron to a deal. More than likely it could be Christian Gomez getting the boot if Veron signs. Some fans may not like the idea but Gomez wants DP money; but landing a player like Veron could really boost a club’s status around the world. Not to say that Gomez isn’t a world class player but Veron is Veron really.

DC could get some help if Jamie Moreno retires but that isn’t too likely (more or less it depends on how DC fares in the post season I bet for Jamie); or they could look to do something with Luciano Emilio but that wouldn’t make the most sense because of his current form.

There has been talk of adding another DP slot for each club but would DC really use it on two midfielders? I think that answer only can be answered if these two can work together, which is something that I highly doubt could happen. Two totally different personalities really.

So what does DC do? Trade Gomez, sign him up and sign Veron if there are two DP slots next season? Keep Gomez and not sign Veron? I think the ladder of the questions won’t happen since they have been after Veron for months now. Honestly, I think the trading of Gomez would be the most logical. Where he would end up would be the biggest question. I could see a place like Chivas being a good fit or even a San Jose, a club that will be looking to build around a player. And maybe if Fernando Clavijo keeps his job somehow in Colorado he could be a decent fit there. Who knows.

What’s your take on the DC on the verge of getting a player like Veron? And your take on Gomez?

DC Leaves Gomez open in the expansion draft. I know this sounds silly, but Gomez will not stay in the MLS plain and simple. He's off for a payday, and I don't blame him. he's 33 and has to think of his family. He's already one of the United heroes (after only 4 seasons) and has nothing to prove. Luciano will stay for 1 more year but get a raise, and Jaime will stay for 1 more year also. Jaime will play as a super-sub, however, and probably have his pay restructured a little bit. That's jsut my take, but this requires signing veron first, which is anything but a done deal.

I see DC picking up Veron, he's having a hard time finding a team
in the EPL that will sign him. If Gomez gets picked up by a team
outside the MLS, I'll be surprised. At 33 he has a couple solid
years left in him. San Jose is defenitely an option, but Chivas USA
looking like a better fit. And on Emilio, he's got a trend of
jumping clubs regularly. Now that he's on the team that looks like
a shoe in for the Supporters shield and perhaps even the MLS cup,
not to mention on track for the league's golden boot, I think he'll
be looking for more. Whether that more is in terms of money or a
bigger league (which would equate to more money) we'll just have
to see. Definitely agree aobut Jaime being used as a super sub in
the dying minutes of matches.
