MLS Prime-Time Preview

A nice looking eastern conference showdown tonight on ESPN2 with New England hosting Kansas City. Both teams sit currently at the top of the east and a win by either team will mean a lot going into the start of August.

Looking at this game you have to think that the Revs have to come out with more passion and fire than they have in previous home games. Recently at home the Revs are a team that just gets a single point against clubs that they should easily beat. They cannot do that tonight as a high powered offense comes into town like Kansas City has.

The last time they met it was a 4-3 classic where Eddie Johnson lit up the Revolution defense for three goals. Don’t expect another outburst like that tonight even though some Thursday night games have been blowouts. Expect the Revs to use the last game between these two clubs as motivation to shutout the Wizards.

Also remember, that KC doesn’t exactly have the best defense in the league either. The Wizards are at the bottom of the league in goals allowed with Salt Lake, Chicago and Toronto. Company that definitely won’t help their cause later on if they expect to make a deep run in the MLS playoffs. The offense is carrying the Wizards but you have to expect the defense to either pick up the slack or completely break down and cause this club to not go far at all. I think this is a good match to test that theory.

Its been more than a month since the Revs last won a home game and I think tonight will be the night they get it done and begin to build a lead in the eastern standings. Any sort of lead in the east is a good thing and getting a few more points certainly will help their cause. I see some goals but not seven goals like last time. I am curious to see how Eddie Johnson handles the prime-time lights as well as the rest of the Wizards, who are playing in their first Thursday night game of the season.
WVH Prediction: New England 3, KC 1
