LandyCakes Back To San Jose?

Posted by Drew Epperley under: LA Galaxy; MLS; New York Red Bulls; News and Rumors; San Jose Earthquakes .

It looks as though I may have to change my image at the top of the page next season if this comes true. Apparently the topic of discussion this afternoon surrounds Mr. Landon Donovan and who he will play for next season.

Its no secret about the rules of the DP spot on MLS roster for this season and into next. Donovan will be a DP player next season based on his contract and value and most believe that the Galaxy will either deal the star for deal for another DP spot to keep him and sign another star.

Word is now that Alexi Lalas plans to sell Donovan at the end of the season to either New York or San Jose.

Both clubs would make some sense to Donovan though I am not sure exactly how the Red Bulls would be able to afford Donovan when they already have Reyna and Angel eating up DP spots already. Some say they will ask Reyna to renegotiate his contract and that they will trade for Donovan and give up either Jeff Parke or Carlos Mendes (both are cheap and are defenders that Lalas will want and need), money and some high draft picks.

Now the most sense would be for Donovan to return to where he began his MLS time in San Jose. San Jose will be looking for a notable player to restart their club with. But the question remains…would the San Jose fans want him back?

This was talked about after Beckham was originally signed - how LAG would need a second DP for Donovan. On another level, do you think this explains Donovan’s lack of form? Remember Quaranta’s quote when he was traded from LA: something isn’t right (or words to that effect).
