Big Updates for Tuesday

Lots of news today that I missed while I was out job hunting all day. We apparently have a new club joining next season, okay, well an old club but a new club if that makes any sense what so ever. A big time player swap between two western teams and an update on a U20 player that could possibly be cashing in his U20 World Cup pay.

~~ First off, time to welcome back the San Jose Earthquakes to the league!! SI.com broke word of this story earlier today that the club will officially be reborn as the league’s 14th club tomorrow afternoon.

What it means for the league is a balanced schedule (at least I hope so) for the 2008 season. But the bigger concern for now is where the team will play. Probably either Stanford Stadium or McAfee Stadium in Oakland until a new stadium is built.

~~  Next is the trade today between Colorado and Salt Lake. Colorado trades US International Kyle Beckerman for RSL’s playmaker Mehdi Ballouchy. A straight player-for-player deal between the two Rocky Mountain Clubs.

What it means for each club is interesting. I think this is a good deal for both really. Beckerman can be a bit of a baby at times I think and getting him out of Colorado was a good step for the Rapids I think. For Real, getting a decent player in the midfield is a big time step. Not to mention they may have needed this deal more than anything once Nathan Sturgis and Freddy Adu bolt to Europe in the coming months.

Colorado lands a player that I find to be much too overrated for his position. I am interested to see how he will work in the Rapid’s midfield. Probably a waste of a deal for the Rapids in my mind at this point.

~~ It has also been thrown around that David Beckham will not make his Galaxy debut this weekend in the World Series of Football against Chelsea FC. A nagging ankle injury, however, limited Becks to calisthenics and light running with fellow invalid Chris Albright. He injured his ankle in games with Real Madrid and with England before coming over to America. Galaxy Coach Frank Yallop has not ruled out resting Beckham in this weekend’s game against Chelsea.
I think it may be more wise than anything to sit him out for this mini-tournament. Its two games that are in LA, so no big deal other than pissing ESPN off a bit.

~~ MLS Commish Don Garber chatted with fans today. Heres a transcript of what was said. Loads of the same old questions, but I was happy to see some of my thoughts answered like why the league has so many teams in the playoffs. Interesting read really as always.

~~ And lastly for today, US U20 National team member and Columbus Crew player Danny Szetela’s chase for a European contract continues.

American Soccer Daily has spoken with Szetela’s agent Shep Messing and the leaders in acquiring Szetela are Scottish club Celtic, Italian clubs Siena and Parma, German club Herth Berlin and English club Reading.

No real word on which club he will actually land with but this isn’t the best of news for the Crew who had to feel this was only a matter of time. My money is actually going between Celtic and Reading at this point. I say Reading because there are other American’s on the roster and it would only makes sense.

Szetela is big joke started by old money hungry Shep. Danny doesn''t start of play for the Crew yet big clubs want him? He got subbed off in the last kid's tourny for poor play and now the world wants him. Well they can have him jsut send a good transfer fee.
