The MLS released their starting eleven for this year’s all-star game with Celtic FC. A few first timers on the starting list that may surprise some, while some normal faces that should help lead the MLS over the Scottish Champs.

MLS First XI

Goalkeeper: Matt Reis (New England Revolution)
Defenders: Jonathan Bornstein (Chivas USA), Jimmy Conrad (Kansas City Wizards), Michael Parkhurst (New England Revolution)
Midfielders: Ricardo Clark (Houston Dynamo), Dwayne De Rosario (Houston Dynamo), Christian Gomez (D.C. United), Shalrie Joseph (New England Revolution), Juan Toja (FC Dallas)
Forwards: Juan Pablo Angel (Red Bull New York), Eddie Johnson (Kansas City Wizards)

A few names don’t surprise me at all. Matt Reis is a solid choice in the back as he has lead the Revs to a very solid start in this first half of the season.

The back three is a little interesting in my mind. Jimmy Conrad, Michael Parkhurst and first-timer Jonathan Borestein should be a good pairing in the back though I have to say I am a little surprised to see Conrad in the backline. I would have rather seen his team-mate Jose Burciaga Jr. but Conrad is a very good defender.

In the midfield is where things change up a bit. Ricardo Clark is a bit of a surprise to me as he hasn’t had a lot of action this season due to international call-ups with the US national team to really win me over for this starting eleven. Same goes with his Dynamo teammate Dewayne De Rosario. DeRo hasn’t had the best of seasons so far as his time with the Dynamo have been surrounded by contract issues.

The next three are totally worthy in my mind. Christian Gomez started off slow with DC but has really picked things up for the Black-and-Red in recent weeks. Same goes for Sharlie Joesph, who had a bit of a contract issue of his own. However, unlike DeRo, Joesph has been able to play through the issues and play really well.

Last and certainly not least is Dallas’s Juan Carlos Toja. A very worthy selection to the all-star team as his flair on the field and his passion for the game has really helped lead Dallas to the best record in the league so far this season (even though the Hoops have played a few more games than everyone else). Toja carried well with the media vote and with the coaches.

Up top are a pairing that most will be interested to see as Eddie Johnson and Juan Pablo Angel will be with one another to lead the attack for the MLS. Angel has been the most consistent scorer this season while Johnson scored a majority of his goals in two games. I honestly think that a Maykel Galindo or a Luciano Emilio would have been a better fit to make the starting eleven rather than Johnson.

Having said that my starting eleven looked a little something like this:

Goalkeeper: Matt Reis (New England Revolution)
Defenders: Jonathan Bornstein (Chivas USA), Carlos Mendes (Red Bull New York), Michael Parkhurst (New England Revolution)
Midfielders: Ben Olsen (DC United), Steve Ralston (New England Revolution), Gillermo Barros Schelotto (Columbus Crew), Shalrie Joseph (New England Revolution), Juan Toja (FC Dallas)
Forwards: Juan Pablo Angel (Red Bull New York), Maykel Galindo (Chivas USA)
