FC Dallas has been on the hunt for a European partner and now they may have found one in Champions League runner-up Liverpool FC. General Manager Michael Hitchcock of FC Dallas have been in meetings with Liverpool owner and fellow Dallas sports owner Tom Hicks about the partnership.
Hicks recently paired with George Gillett to purchase a controlling interest in Liverpool. So the likelihood of Liverpool playing matches at Pizza Hut Park or taking advantage of the complex’s ample training fields in some kind of visit to Dallas have improved dramatically.
“Obviously, Liverpool is one of the logical options for us,” Hitchcock said. “It does make sense in a lot of ways for both of us.
“By no means do we have a partnership finalized,” he said. “But there is a lot of interest on both sides.”
FC Dallas already has international partnerships with Mexican based Tigres UNAL and Brazilian club Atletico Paranaense. Hitchcock has said that getting a European club would help complete an international partnership with various regions.
Liverpool makes the most sense due in part to the owner being from Dallas and the large training facility that Dallas has would be good enough for a club like Liverpool to use if they wanted to.
FCD already has home-and-home series with their two partners, one series being in preseason and the other in the summer. So the likelihood of a series or at least a match with Liverpool is a high probability. There is also plans to possibly set up a international tournament between the clubs if the deal goes through between the Hoops and it’s three foreign friends.
Don’t expect anything to take shape this summer though due to the Hoops busy summer schedule. But somewhere in the future it could very well take place. This partnership would be right up there with many of the other deals that teams have made with English clubs. Definitely a good move.
