The LA Galaxy and the USL-1 Minnesota Thunder have announced that the Galaxy will be playing in a friendly on October 10 in the Metrodome in Minneapolis. The opponent has yet to be announced for the Galaxy. It will apparently be a big name club.
The Galaxy have basically whored themselves out this summer and fall with friendlies and I will say it again, they won’t succeed because of it. I am not saying the whole David Beckham thing won’t do wonders for the club and the league because it will, I am saying they won’t win the MLS Championship this fall as well as I really don’t see them making the playoffs.
I know they want to get the most bang for their buck with Becks coming over but they have almost shown me that they are placing a greater value on the all mighty dollar than on winning a championship.
The club is currently in a hole and almost in the cellar in the league. Thankfully for them teams like RSL exists and play in the same conference as they do.
I will say this though, on the bright side, the quality of clubs that the Galaxy will be facing this year outside of the MLS is amazing. Just look at what they have on the friendly side as well as the couple competitions they will be in:
05/23 – Wednesday: Rangers F.C.
07/17 – Tuesday: Tigres UANL – World Series of Football
07/21 – Saturday: Chelsea FC – World Series of Football
07/24 – Tuesday: Pachuca – SuperLiga
07/28 – Saturday: CD Guadalajara – SuperLiga
10/03 – Wednesday: @ Vancouver Whitecaps
10/10 – Wednesday: Club TBA – Minnesota
Busy friendly/competition schedule coming up for the Galaxy. Oh yeah, their toughest month is going to be September, they have eight league matches in that month. Though some could argue that August will be rough since they have six matches and five of them are on the road.
Lastly, the longer they stay in the US Open Cup, the more games they get. I just don’t know how much gas in the tank this club will have. They have to pick things up right away.
