Andriy Shevchenko possibly coming to the US to play in the MLS this summer? Seriously? No.
I hear and read this rumor and just cannot believe my eyes. He does sound slightly serious but I really don’t know which way to take on it.
“Soccer is growing in the US and I would like to be a part of that,” he said. “I played there last summer against the Major League Soccer All-Stars and I saw that it is definitely improving.”
His wife is American (pictured below) so that could play in part of his desire to go over the pond and play in the young league. Remember folks, if the wife isn’t happy somewhere then either is her hubby. Simply put, if his wife wants to go home to the States then Shevchenko will join.
IF, and I do mean IF this were to even happen I would imagine a DC or possibly a New England to land him. His wife is from around DC so that would logically make sense but if you look around the league in markets where he would be comfortable and where she would be comfortable it would only make sense (in my mind really) in those two. Big enough cities with good enough teams. DC is a stretch unless they unload some players up top in order to sign him.
I feel New England is a better fit for him because the Revs would have less to unload and the thought of Shevchenko and Twellman playing up top has to make the league’s mouth water just a bit.
In all honesty I don’t see him coming over just yet…maybe in a couple years. But hey, if it happens, then great. I just hope he doesn’t land in New York or LA…or even Chicago. Sorry Galaxy, Fire and Red Bulls…you have your DPs…and New York has two. The league has to be able to balance it out.
Wouldn’t you want to keep her happy? I think so…your thoughts?
