I guess I am a little late on this news but for the most part I was trying to figure out exactly what I thought about it. A couple days ago it was reported that Abel Xavier, a Portuguese defender will join the LA Galaxy later this summer once the transfer window opens up.
Xavier is a thirty-something guy who has been with as many teams in Europe as some journey men we see in other professional leagues here in the US. He may be notable to some for his failed drug test is the 2005 UEFA Cup. He sat out a year and later joined EPL club Middlesbrough.
He has 20 caps for Portugal’s National team over the many years of his 17 year career. So he does bring a bit of experience that may be lacking on the Galaxy’s back-line.
He isn’t a huge name though but his experience should speak for itself if he has anything left in the tank. He may very well be as nutty as Dennis Rodman. If that isn’t enough to get you out of your seat and go see this guy along side David Beckham then I don’t know what will. As long as his personality fits in with the Galaxy then things will work out fine.
I still believe the Galaxy need to go after some offensive power in a striker. Word is that they are trying to get Carlos Ruiz back in a Galaxy uniform. I don’t see it and I don’t want to see it. If a deal like that happened you can very well guess I will be writing a hate letter to the league about how they want to stack the deck for the Galaxy just because of David f’n Beckham. But hopefully it won’t come to that.
Either way, this is a good deal for the Galaxy. He won’t be a designated player or anything like that but I am sure he will have a fairly decent sized contract. Probably one like Schelotto got in Columbus.
