First MLS teams to compete in this year’s version of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup.

Salt Lake defeated Kansas City 2-1 in extra time. Thanks to Andy Williams and Jeff Cunningham.
Questions going into the night were:

1. Would Eddie Johnson be the same Grown-Ass Man who terrorized DC last weekend? – No, he played a half and really gave no production to the Wizards like he has become accustomed to. It is possible though that the Wizards were not putting a whole lot of stock into this match for their bigger names up top and wanted to preserve them for the weekend ahead. Maybe. Either way, the Wizards lost.

2. Would Freddy Adu show up in this match? – Absolutely. He helped set up the first goal, drawing the PK. He is starting to look good with Jeff Cunningham.

3. How would rookie keeper Chris Seitz fair? – Not bad really. He was able to save four shots even though he gave up a late goal that sent the game into the extra frame. I and many others believe this is the kid that RSL needs to go to between the pipes.

For the most part it was a fairly bland game. It was cold and snowy in Salt Lake City and those could be excuses the Wizards are using this morning. I don’t buy into it all that much really but some may. They did out-shoot RSL 15-8 in the game but the teams were even at five shots on target a piece.

RSL will now move on to face Mountain Cup rival Colorado in the next qualifying leg of the tournament.
