Breaking news, Columbus Crew are set to use their designated player spot to legendary Argentine Guillermo Barros Schelotto. The 33 year old Schelotto is regarded as a legend in soccer down in Argentina, most coming with Boca Juniors. Even though he seldom gets a start there, anytime he steps foot on the pitch magic seems to follow.
Details of the deal are saying he will get around $1 to 2 million for two years.
This is a big signing and most people won’t even know of Schelotto. He has led Boca Juniors to multiple titles and he has scored 60 goals for them in his 10+ years.
As mentioned before his title winnings are pretty major. He holds the Boca record of 15 titles and the Argentine player with the most ever titles won, with 17 titles, seconded by Oscar Ruggeri. His titles are:
- Apertura 1998, 2000, 2003 and 2005
- Clausura 1999, 2006
- Copa Libertadores 2000, 2001 and 2003
- Intercontinental Cup 2000 and 2003.
- Copa Sudamericana 2004 and 2005.
- Recopa Sudamericana 2005 and 2006.
Pretty impressive if you ask me. Columubus gets a solid player with a great background. Will it be enough? Time will tell. His only request was to finish his last game against rival River Plate, which takes place next week. He will then travel north to begin his new career in Columbus.
More details to come as they arrive.
