Kudos to MLSunderground for breaking this story on the Wizards signing Argentine play-maker Carlos Marinelli.
Many may have no idea who Marinelli is but he was once tabbed as the next Maradona. Marinelli was considered one of the hottest prospects in Argentina as a teen. He was sold from Argentine giants Boca Juniors to Middlesbrough at the age of 17 and received a good amount of playing time. The Argentine eventually moved on to Italian club Torino. His star sort of fizzed out as he never fully lived up to his hype.
This is an excellent sign for the Wizards if it pans out. Marinelli will be solely responsible for making plays out of the midfield and not being a leader on the pitch. A role that he will undoubtedly be able to enjoy. He isn’t the leading type from what I have read up on him and he just needs the ball at his feet to do some magic.
I felt the midfield was pretty weak with the Wizards but if this kid (who is still relatively young at 25) works out, then they will be able contend this year. Before this deal took place I honestly didn’t expect much out from the Wizards this season.
