Few thoughts and comments on the US – Ecuador game on ESPN2.
I have to say the trio of O’Brien, Arena, and Wynalda are getting better with one another. O’Brien is a better voice for soccer and thankfully it isn’t Rob Stone doing the games. Still I feel ESPN/ABC is still lacking a solid soccer play-by-play person. O’Brien is good but I still feel he lacks something in his analysis of the game. Maybe a younger voice would fit better? Though with that Rob Stone is younger and is still no where near as good as O’Brien.
Sorry, those are just my feelings as a soccer broadcaster…I can’t say I would be any better but I just feel there are still some changes that need to be done on the booth.
Wynalda’s little halftime piece was a little dumb I felt. Though the thoughts were just and I could agree with some of them, I felt the segment was a little wasteful. I think a little more with it could make it a lot better. I am sure it will develop more.
You can easily sense disappointment in Bruce Arena’s voice sometimes with the US team, even when they are doing well. Somethings I get the feeling he believes he blew his shot at getting this squad to a championship game in the World Cup or something.
Donovan’s play improved a whole lot in this game. Taking players on and scoring the first goal was great. Something we definitely never saw in the World Cup. I was a little worried with him wearing the captains armband but he truly showed off today and played very nicely. He found a lot of looks at goal and actually took them.
I love the new blue kits. Can’t wait to order one myself.
Sometimes I still do not see why Eddie Johnson starts for the US. He misses chance after chance. Give Twellman or someone else a shot if you ask me. I believe he has started to miss his chance with this team. Maybe I am harsh on that, but I got nothing out of his play today.
The defense was sloppy. Just sloppy on both sides I felt.
I still agree with Wynalda, the interim tag needs to be dropped and I will continue to say that until it does.
The refs missed a lot of calls today I felt. For both teams.
Anyone think that the Ecuadorian keeper looked like Timmy Howard? I dunno, I thought they looked a lot alike.
Two more Lando goals. Wow. First was a breakaway and the second one was a sexy strike to the top corner. Absolute brilliant strikes. Bruce said it well, “when the Landon plays the way he is playing today, the US is the best team in CONCACAF and can compete with any country in the world.”
Ecuador just ran out of gas. Simply put. Lack of elevation maybe?
Solid, solid win over a very strong South American side. 3-1 is good any day of the week. Lots of positives with a few negatives. The blue kits were wonderful, as were the goals.
