Colorado has added to their off season of deals with yet another today by landing keeper Zack Thornton “from the Fire”. The Fire technically waved Thornton a couple weeks back, or at least he wasn’t at Fire camp this spring.
The move is not surprising at considering the Rapids needed something in net this season after trading Joe Cannon to the Galaxy. Thornton will probably get the nod in between the pipes for the Rapids. I see him playing over Matt Jordan come opening day.
I like the move for the Rapids. Again it isn’t surprising at all because they need some stability in net that was not present before. Chicago lands a supplemental pick in next year’s draft. Whoopie really if you’re the Fire, you already knew Thornton wasn’t the man anymore for you and it was a good time to get rid of him. Honestly I think they should have released him sooner and got a better deal out of it but sometimes a supplemental pick can work out.
I can’t say I don’t like the deals that the Rapids have made in this off season. Sure they let go of a great keeper in Joe Cannon but getting Thornton is a boost. Other deals like Herculez Gomez and Costa Rican midfielder Yherland McDonald. They have some good pieces in place for this season, not to mention a brand new park to play in. They could be a dark horse pick in the West. Could be.
