Several media outlets have reported on Zinedine Zidane’s current trip to New York, fueling speculation that he is in talks with the MLS to join the Red Bulls. He was spotted at a New York Knicks game, rubbing elbows with Spike Lee, and he also attended a fashion week event to help promote the Adidas Y3 fashion line.
If RBNY does sign Zidane, a long shot at best, he would have to serve a six-game suspension for the infamous headbutting incident against Italy in the World Cup. It would provide the MLS with another infusion of talent, not to mention the publicity the signing would garner worldwide. Since Zidane is retired, RBNY would not have to pay a transfer fee to acquire the midfielder’s services. He would most likely take Amado Guevara’s spot in the lineup who was traded to Chivas USA for their Designated Player slot.
